The six

Set out from the shore today,
A lone wooden boat, two truncated masts,
As a rock laden coastline dips slow,
Behind us, our Antarctic family, the friends we leave,
To set passage through southern swells,
High above our masts’ wet canvas heavy,
Point to tilt vertical, rise in flight,
No keel, only weighted stone with six battered bodies,
We be the strongest hope to the twenty-two,
Souls of still the ice cold rocky spite,
Sailing for South Georgia,
Far beyond the frozen sea.

    • It is loosely thought upon Ernest Shackleton with five others, departing from Elephant Island to South Georgia after the loss of their ship to the ice.
